EQUAL OPPORTUNITY POLICY
PAST LIVES does not discriminate on the basis of race, age, color, religion, national origin or ancestry, sex, gender, disability, veteran status, genetic information, sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression.
AGE POLICY
Unless otherwise specified, PAST LIVES membership is open to anyone 18+. Youth 16-17 may be a Guest and/or attend classes after a legal guardian has signed a liability waiver. Youth ages 10-15 may be a Guest and/or attend classes with an adult and have a waiver signed by a legal guardian. Youth under 10 years of age must get prior approval from PAST LIVES, be with an adult at all times, and have a waiver signed by their legal guardian.
AUTOMATIC MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL
PAST LIVES offers month-to-month membership, and bills Members using an approved and secure electronic payment method on a recurring basis on the 1st of each month. Members can cancel their PAST LIVES membership at any time, however, membership cancellations must occur 72 hours prior to the next bill date to avoid a $50 “short-notice” cancellation penalty. For current pricing of Membership dues, please find the page attached.
PAST LIVES reserves the right to change dues and other charges with 30 days written notice.
LATE FEES
Should PAST LIVES be unable to collect dues owed by Member by the 7th day of the month, a late charge of 10% of the total amount Member owes will be assessed and payable by Member for that month, and will accrue in addition to the monthly dues.
MEMBERSHIP CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY
PAST LIVES membership dues are not refundable, save for extreme circumstances or errors on the part of PAST LIVES. PAST LIVES retains the right to revoke membership at any time at Administration’s sole discretion and with no right to a refund.
Once Membership is ended, Member will be expected to take any items out of storage/in building by the last day of membership. Any and all Items left after 14 days post-Membership will become Past Lives property.

PAYMENT DISPUTE POLICY
Any dues or fines incurred or associated with processing a disputed charge for a payment to PAST LIVES shall be reimbursed by the Member if the payment is determined by Administration to be legitimate.
ACCESS
All Members must use their own keycard or access code to enter the building, once provided. Keycard and/or access codes must not be shared or made available to anyone other than the assigned Member. If a keycard or access code is lost, misplaced, stolen, or compromised, the Member must notify PAST LIVES immediately. There is a $10.00 fee for lost keycards.
Current access with membership is available 24/7. Access is granted for business purposes only, and the PAST LIVES lease forbids any habitation. PAST LIVES reserves the right to change access hours at any time.
Members are responsible for ensuring exterior doors are closed and locked when entering or leaving premises.
Non-compliance with these policies can result in immediate termination of membership.
TRAINING AND COMPETENCY FOR THE USE OF EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, AND MACHINERY
Safety is paramount at PAST LIVES. The Member acknowledges that access to the shop includes access to inherently dangerous equipment and situations. All persons entering spaces operated or controlled by PAST LIVES may be required to successfully complete a complimentary Building Orientation. Prior to working in the Shop(s) in any capacity, a Woodshop Orientation or Metal Shop Orientation must be completed at a cost of $75 (or $25/hour if the class exceeds 3 hours) for the class, to be billed to the member’s payment method on file. Specialized machinery may require additional training at a rate of $35 per hour, subject to change without notice.
Members must sign the Safety Orientation Acknowledgement and Waiver of Liability form after completing the Orientation.
PAST LIVES will require Members to complete periodic safety reviews of equipment and its safe operation, activities, and hazardous substance handling. Such reviews would be conducted either through videos or in-person attendance, at the discretion of Administration, to uphold safety standards. PAST LIVES may require Member to demonstrate competency for the safe operation of any material, tool, equipment or machinery the Member uses or intends to use on PAST LIVES premises, at any time, to the satisfaction of PAST LIVES. PAST LIVES may also require Member to seek out additional training on any material, tool, equipment or machinery, at Member’s expense.
WEAPONS
PAST LIVES does not allow firearms on the premises. PAST LIVES also does not allow any weapons covered under Oregon Concealed Carry law, with additional information at https://oregon.public.law/statutes/ors. Any questions can be addressed with Past Lives Administration.
DRUGS AND SAFETY
The safety and wellbeing of our Members is critical. Because the use of drugs or alcohol at the Makerspace can affect the safety and morale of other Members, PAST LIVES Members are to be free from any mental or physical impairment due to any substance, legal or illegal, that could cause risk to the health and safety of themselves or other Members. Illegal drugs are not allowed on the premises.
Additionally:
No alcohol is allowed outside of the upstairs Kitchen and Lounge areas, including Private Studio Spaces.
Alcohol is only allowed in the upstairs Kitchen and Lounge areas between the hours of 6PM and 6AM.
No person may have alcohol or have recently had an alcoholic drink (example: lunchbreak) and use Shop or personal tools, machines or equipment. Any person who has been drinking and trying to use community or personal tools or machines will be asked to leave the premises and potentially have membership revoked.
No alcohol will be provided or allowed at Community Events such as Community Teas and Guild meetings.
No alcohol is currently allowed at Public Events. This could change based on obtaining appropriate insurance and liability coverage.
No person on the Leadership Team or in a position of authority may provide any person in the building alcohol under any circumstance.
PAST LIVES reserves the right to change the alcohol policy at any time, and any change must be adhered to immediately. Disregarding our policies puts PAST LIVES at risk and will not be tolerated.
PAST LIVES reserves the right to denote that attendance at a Public Event will be restricted to those with valid identification proving that they are over 21 years of age. Furthermore, in the case where an event such as this is held, we reserve the right to limit or restrict use of some or all equipment on site for the duration of the event and a reasonable period afterwards.
CONDUCT
PAST LIVES does not permit and will not tolerate any inappropriate conduct. Such conduct includes, without limitation, using abusive, offensive, insulting, demeaning or hateful language, unnecessarily loud language, lewd conduct or any conduct that harasses or is bothersome to Members, Guests, or PAST LIVES employees, or behavior that is reckless, careless, or destructive. For purposes of clarity and without limitation, any interaction within the PAST LIVES space is subject to the consent of all participants. PAST LIVES reserves the exclusive right to immediately pause membership and ban from the building any person, whether or not a Member, upon receipt of a conduct complaint. Based on verification, PAST LIVES reserves the right to permanently revoke membership.
Smoking/vaping is not allowed inside the building nor within 10 feet of a door, air intake, or operable window of a workplace or business, per Oregon’s Smokefree Workplace Law.
MEMBER OBLIGATIONS
In addition to the above, Member promises the following:
Member will not allow damage to any area of the PAST LIVES facility, or the projects within.
If the actions of a Member damages any part of the PAST LIVES facility, its materials, equipment, tools, machinery, or the projects of another, Member will bear the responsibility for the cost of repair/replacement.
Member will not allow waste of the Utilities or Services provided by PAST LIVES.
Member will make no alterations or additions to the workshop or building.
Member will not remove fixtures from any area of the PAST LIVES facility.
Member will not engage in any activities in or around the PAST LIVES facility that are unlawful, illegal, or unreasonably dangerous.
Member will immediately notify PAST LIVES of any damage, injury, or other reportable incident that occurs while in or around the PAST LIVES facility, preferably in writing.
Member will adhere to all workshop policies that PAST LIVES establishes.
Member will follow required procedures for closing down and securing the PAST LIVES facility when present after normal business hours.
If Member’s phone number or mailing address change at any time during the Membership, Member will timely provide the new contact information to PAST LIVES in writing.
Member will not engage in behavior that is unnecessarily disruptive to the creative process of other Members.
CLEAN SPACE
Members are responsible for cleaning the work or common area they have used, including sweeping, cleaning worktops, emptying dust collection, emptying trash, replacing tools, and any other activity that will return the workspace or common area to a pristine condition. Failure to clean up the area will result in one or more warnings, with a potential for a $25 fine thereafter. Repeated violations can result in termination of membership.
STORAGE
Projects or materials may be left up to 24 hours at PAST LIVES with the permission of PAST LIVES Administration, providing they are stored in a location that is not hazardous or inconvenient, and that is properly labeled with a full name, date it will be removed, and a phone number of the project owner.
Unlabeled items left on the premises for more than 48 hours outside of rented space or after membership expires will be removed. PAST LIVES will make a good faith effort to notify individuals and give fair opportunity to retrieve their material/projects before those materials/projects are declared abandoned and seized. PAST LIVES reserves the right to dispose of abandoned and seized material/projects as it sees fit, and at the sole discretion of PAST LIVES.
Longer-term project storage may be available upon request and subject to availability and additional fee. Contact membership@pastlives.space to request longer-term project storage. Long term storage using floor space is subject to the same pricing as Private Space. See CONTACT, PAYMENT AND INFORMATION FORM for long-term storage terms.
Long term storage space is solely for the use of storing raw materials and consumables for use by the general membership, and not to be used as auxiliary workspace. Machinery may not be placed in long term storage. Long term storage is not guaranteed to remain static. Members with long term storage may be asked to move or altogether remove their stored possessions at any time, temporarily or permanently, subject to proration or refund.
PAST LIVES is not responsible for any item(s) left at PAST LIVES under any circumstances, regardless of duration. When storing items at PAST LIVES, Member should obtain general liability or property insurance if so desired.
TASKS
As a community of Makers, we strive to ensure clean and safe areas. PAST LIVES has a Task system whereas each Member is asked to do a Task a week or be part of a monthly Work Party. Tasks could include taking out trash, organizing tools, sharpening tools, or other needed jobs. Work Parties could do any of the above mentioned Tasks, and/or also work on needed projects to improve PAST LIVES infrastructure. Members can choose to waive their Task/Work Party and pay $20 per month for that waiver.
PAST LIVES reserves the right to redefine the current Task system at any time.
RIGHT TO REGULATE USE OF PROPERTY
PAST LIVES shall have the right to make such rules, regulations, and restrictions in the use of all or any part of the property as it may deem necessary or appropriate. Such rules, regulations, and restrictions shall be known as Shop Rules. Shop Rules shall apply to all Members and their Guests, and all other visitors (family members, clients, etc.). PAST LIVES may modify, amend, or revise the Shop Rules in whole or in part at any time.
Member understands that they are responsible for the materials that they use, and that they only use materials they know they have permission to use, have provided themselves, or have purchased from PAST LIVES.
PAST LIVES facilities and services may be unavailable during a period of repair and maintenance or special events, programs, private events, or by Administration’s schedule for these events. In order to keep the facility in the best possible condition, PAST LIVES in its entirety or in part may be closed for a temporary time period for repairs and renovations. There will be no adjustment in dues for this period of closure.
ASSUMPTION OF RISK
Member acknowledges the inherent risks of activities using tools, equipment, devices, and hazardous materials of any kind commonly used in fabrication, woodcraft, metal work, various arts and other tool related activities, and that participation in such activities and/or use of such tools may result in injury, illness, death or damage to Member or Member’s personal property. Further, such risks and dangers may be caused by Members, other Members, instructors or other Attendees and may arise from foreseeable or unforeseeable causes including, without limitation, such injuries as electrocution, burns, puncture/impalement, slice, abrasion, fracture and slip/fall injuries. Member hereby fully assumes all such risks and any others which arise because of Member activities including participation in a workshop/class at PAST LIVES. Member has the responsibility of learning and understanding the use of and safety procedures of the equipment, machines and tools within the PAST LIVES facility. PAST LIVES will provide reference materials to Members on the safe operation and use of the tools, equipment, and machinery, and encourages their review.
HAZARDOUS ACTIVITIES OR SUBSTANCES
Members must not use any hazardous substances or engage in any hazardous activities, above and beyond the commonly understood intended use of equipment in the Facilities, without explicit permission from the Administration. Permission may be granted at PAST LIVES’ sole discretion upon Member’s satisfactory demonstration of their competency in safely handling such substances or doing such activities, and Member’s provision, at their own expense, of any safety apparatus, equipment, tools or the like deemed necessary by PAST LIVES. Depending on the hazardous substances or hazardous activities proposed, a Shop Orientation with a trained and approved Member of PAST LIVES may also be required. PAST LIVES will require Members to complete periodic safety reviews of equipment, activities, and hazardous substance handling. Such reviews would be conducted either through videos or in-person attendance, at the discretion of Administration, to uphold safety standards.
a) “Hazardous Activities” means activities that, because of the substances, equipment, or processes involved, may cause or pose a significant or unusual, present or potential hazard to human health or safety even when properly used, done, stored, or otherwise handled. The term “Hazardous Activities” is used in its very broadest sense and includes without limitation, any use of the Makerspace equipment that varies from the commonly understood intended use of said equipment.
b) “Hazardous Substances” means materials that may cause or pose a present or potential hazard to human health or the environment even when properly used, stored, disposed of, generated, or otherwise handled. The term “Hazardous Substances” is used in its very broadest sense and includes without limitation any and all hazardous, inflammable or toxic substances, materials or waste as defined by or listed under State and Federal Environmental Laws.
PRODUCTION
PAST LIVES does not provide workshop access for production-scale fabrication absent separate written authorization. At the discretion of PAST LIVES Administration, any Members viewed as doing large scale production work that uses resources above and beyond membership dues in any of the PAST LIVES shops will be notified to stop production, and membership will be canceled and any associated dues/fees relating to production may be charged to said Member's account.
PAST LIVES encourages collaboration, Member partnerships and entrepreneurship. Please contact commissions@pastlives.space for information and policies regarding hiring employees and contractors, small business support, or scaling up your trade/art.
GUESTS
All Guests must complete a Guest Release and Waiver of Liability form before entering the shop. PAST LIVES reserves the right to withhold approval of Guest access for any reason. All Guests must be accompanied at all times by either an active Member or Administration. Members shall be responsible for the conduct and activity of their Guest, who shall be subject to these Terms and Conditions and all revisions and changes of such. Guests are limited to two Guest visits before they are required to become Members. We do understand there can be extenuating circumstances especially with children. Please contact Memberships with any questions.
Guests are not permitted to use any tools or equipment within the facility without approved training or written permission from Administration. Each Member will receive 2 complimentary Guest passes per individual Guest every month. PAST LIVES reserves the right to start charging for Guests at any time.
DAMAGES
Each Member of PAST LIVES shall be liable for any property damage to PAST LIVES and/or personal injury to other persons using the facilities caused by the Member or the Member’s Guest. It shall be the obligation of the Member to pay for any costs involved upon presentation of a statement thereof. In addition, Members are responsible for any damage they cause to the projects or materials of other Members. If the entirety or any part of PAST LIVES equipment or Facility is damaged due to a PAST LIVES Member’s actions, PAST LIVES reserves the right to bill said PAST LIVES Member the market price of the damaged equipment plus labor. If controversy arises, both parties agree to arbitration per Oregon law.
VIOLATION OF POLICIES OR RULES
If any Member or Guest violates any of the PAST LIVES Policies, PAST LIVES may require that person to immediately stop work and leave. A Member’s violation of any of the Policies may also cause PAST LIVES, in its sole discretion, to terminate that person’s membership and/or other agreements without right to a refund.
SUSPENSION/TERMINATION OF MEMBERSHIP BY ADMINISTRATION
Administration has the right to suspend and/or terminate any membership for non-payment of dues, fees, or for behavior detrimental to the experience of other Members, employees or Guests, or for any reason deemed sufficient in the sole discretion of Administration.
NO JOINT VENTURE OR REPRESENTATION
Membership in PAST LIVES does not constitute a joint venture, partnership, nor other ongoing business interest between the Member and PAST LIVES, LLC, nor does membership grant a Member authority to act as an agent or representative of PAST LIVES, LLC, its subsidiaries, affiliates, or assigns.
INDEMNIFICATION
Member agrees at all times to indemnify, defend and hold harmless PAST LIVES and its Members, Officers, Directors, Authorized Representatives, Agents, Contractors, Successors and Assigns from and against any and all claims, actions, damages, liabilities and expenses, including, but not limited to, attorney’s fees, arising in whole or in part out of or by reason of: (i) any loss of life, personal injury, accident or occurrence in or around the Makerspace or Facilities, any use of the Makerspace or Facilities, or any hidden or apparent defect, or any other condition in the Makerspace or Facilities; (ii) any damage to or loss of any property of Member, or property in Member’s possession, whether or not by reason of theft, vandalism, criminal acts, or failure of PAST LIVES' security measures, and whether or not this damage to or loss of property occurs in or around the Makerspace or Facilities; (iii) any act, negligence, or fault of Member, their Agents or Invitees, whether or not occurring in or around the Makerspace or Facilities; (iv) any acts, negligence, fault or omissions of other PAST LIVES Members, their Agents or Invitees; or (v) any breach or default in the performance of any obligation to be performed under this Agreement by Member, or resulting from or arising out of the act or omission of Member, their Agents or Invitees.
MEDIA RELEASE
Member consents that PAST LIVES has full and unrestricted publishing and use rights on social media channels, print media, and PAST LIVES website for any photographs taken on the PAST LIVES property by PAST LIVES employees or volunteers, of any Member’s image, materials or art, either brought into or created/generated at PAST LIVES. Members hereby release, discharge, and agree to hold harmless PAST LIVES from any liability by virtue of any blurring, distortion, alteration, optical illusion, or use in composite form whether intentional or otherwise, that may occur or be produced in the taking of said picture or in any subsequent processing thereof, as well as any publication thereof, including without limitation any claims for libel or invasion of privacy.
I, the undersigned, acknowledge that PAST LIVES operates under rules and regulations established for the safety, comfort and protection of Members or other patrons. By signing, I confirm that I have read the Member Agreement in its entirety. I agree I have read and will abide by and be bound by all posted rules and regulations, as well as by rules and regulations subsequently approved and posted or published by PAST LIVES, as will any Guest I bring. Facilities, equipment, hours, services, regulations, and policies are subject to change, without prior notice, at the sole discretion of PAST LIVES, and I accept such reasonable changes as a condition of membership.
